In search of the nature of two-way interactions: some empirical applicationsJoeri HofmansKU Leuven | |
| Abstract: | When studying the relationship between two categorical predictor variables and a continuous criterion often not only the absence or the presence of an interaction but also the nature of the interaction is of key importance. In this regard, one can distinguish between four types of interactions: interactions that are ordinal with respect to none, one or both predictor variables. Recently, Schepers and Van Mechelen (submitted) proposed a two-mode clustering based technique that allows to reveal which type of interaction most adequately represents the major pattern of the relationship between both predictor variables and the criterion. In this talk, using three examples from the domain of contextualized personality psychology, the validity of this approach will be demonstrated by showing that different types of interactions are found and that each type warrants a different psychological interpretation that is both logically sound and in agreement with the existing literature. |
