From biological questions to biological answers: Applying multivariate analysis in omics researchIr. Robert van den BergTNO and Universiteit van Amsterdam | |
| Abstract: | In the last decade, advances in analytical sciences enabled the simultaneous measurement of the expression of thousands of genes, or the concentration of hundreds of proteins, or metabolites. These advances opened the way to study the behavior of these biomolecules on a system wide scale. Multivariate analysis methods can aid the biological interpretation of the data resulting from omics experiments. There are different aspects important for the successful analysis of this type of data, such as, the biological question, experimental design, properties of the data (i.e., sources of variation), and expected characteristics of the studied biological processes. These aspects are interdependent, hence choices made with regard to, for instance, data pretreatment, will affect the outcome of the analysis and therefore how relevant the answer to the biological question is. In this presentation I will explain these different aspects and I will illustrate the application of different statistical methods for addressing different biological questions with metabolomics data sets. |
