SCA and rotational freedom: In search of distinctive and common components.

Abstract: In recent years, researchers often find themselves in the possession of different blocks of information that pertain to the same entities, but lack the statistical tools to adequately analyse such data. One research question one can be interested in is about what part of the information in these blocks is shared by all (or some) of the blocks and what part is specific for one data block. A method to tackle this question will be proposed for the specific case of two two-way two-mode data blocks that have (at least) one mode in common. The method consists of two separate steps. First, a component analysis is conducted on the matricized data blocks. Next, the rotational freedom that is characteristic for the extracted components will be used to directly rotate towards some specific components for each data block. Common information, if present in the data, will be caught by the remaining, unspecified components. Two applications will be presented; one concerning bio-informatics and one concerning emotion psychology. The first application offers some preliminary results of an analysis on the expression levels of orthologous genes in E. Coli and B. Subtilis, whereas the second application considers individual differences in anger-related behaviour in different situations.
