The duration of emotional episodes

Philippe Verduyn

KU Leuven

Abstract: An emotional episode refers to the course of an emotion between the moment it starts and the moment it ends. So far, research has primarily focused on the beginning of emotional episodes (why do they start, which appraisals are necessary, etc.). Remarkably, however, the remainder of these episodes have only received a very small amount of research attention. One often neglected aspect of an emotional episode is its duration. I will present two studies that focus explicitly on emotion duration and its covariates. As the data were analysed by means of discrete-time survival analysis, I will also explain the basics of this technique.
