| Abstract: |
4735 pupils who were about to finish their first grade of secondary education participated in a national assessment of the Flemish curriculum standards of biology last school year. The goal of the national assessment was threefold: (a) to estimate through paper-and-pencil tests the percentage of pupils that reached the curriculum standards that refer to the knowledge of biology; (b) to investigate possible differences in pupils' test performance across schools and across classes within schools; (c) to describe the results of a subsample of students on a limited number of performance tasks related to the currciculum standards on observation in nature and on using the microscope. In the presentation, the main results will be presented. Special attention will be given to the methodological issues involved, and the possibilities to improve the methodology in the future. |
