The association between emotional reactivity and recovery and depression levelBettina BrunnerUniversity of Graz and KU Leuven | |
| Abstract: | Previous research has shown that depression is associated with altered psychophysiological and experiential responsiveness to emotional events. However, despite its health consequences, how depression moderates the way individuals recover from emotionally eliciting events has been studied much less. In this study we examined whether healthy women differentially react to and recover from emotional stress induced by film clips, as a function of their current depression level. As psychophysiological measures, frontal EEG asymmetry and heart rate variability were recorded from 80 women before, during and after the film was presented. Emotional experience was rated before and after presentation of the film. Results indicate that low depressed women show a more adaptive reactivity and recovery pattern at the psychophysiological level compared to high depressed women, while no difference was found at the experiential level. |
