Plug ‘n play methods for statistical inference in complex models

Abstract: Complex research questions require complex models. However, statistical inference for complex models is often not straightforward because it is hard to compute the likelihood. Recently, a class of plug ‘n play inference methods have been proposed that circumvent the explicit evaluation of a likelihood. In this talk, we will explain one such technique (the synthetic likelihood approach; Wood, 2010) and apply it to estimate diffusion models for intensive longitudinal data.
