Vagal tone and emotion dynamics

Barbara Ogrinz

KU Leuven

Abstract: Affective experiences change over time and the dynamics of affect are fundamentally influenced by emotion regulation. Vagal tone, indexed by resting heart rate variability, has been proposed as a physiological marker of emotion regulatory ability. This presentation will mainly focus on explaining the origins, assessment, and calculation of heart rate variability, and its theoretical and empirical link with emotion regulation. Finally, I will present a (currently on-going) study designed to investigate how vagal tone is related to affect regulation strategies and emotion dynamics in daily life.
