A meta-analysis to identify the mechanisms underlying signatures of prosocial behavior

Abstract: A key challenge within the domain of contextualized personality psychology pertains to identifying the mechanisms underlying behavioral signatures (i.e., person-specific profiles of behavior over a variety of situations). As proposed by Van Mechelen (2009), important insights into such mechanisms can be obtained through an in-depth analysis of the structure of the behavioral signatures in themselves. A central issue at this point is whether the structure of persons and situations complies with unidimensionality. We will contribute to this issue by examining the unidimensionality question in empirical behavioral signatures, obtained through a meta-analysis of research on prosocial behavior. In this presentation, we will first discuss the challenges that go with such a meta-analysis (including the issues of tracing relevant studies and identifying the correct formal pattern of the behavioral signatures), before presenting an overview of the obtained signatures and their characteristics. Subsequently, we will focus on a specific example of how the mechanisms underlying the behavioral signatures can be obtained and how an integrative synthesis of these mechanisms can be achieved.
