The relation between self-distancing and the duration of emotional experiencePhilippe VerduynKU Leuven | |
| Abstract: | In several recent studies, it has been shown that thinking about an emotional event from a self-distanced perspective leads to a down-regulation of the associated emotion whereas thinking from a self-immersed perspective does not. In these studies, however, down-regulation was typically measured in terms of a decrease in emotional intensity, whereas other important aspects, such as a shortening of the duration of the episode, have not been addressed. Moreover, previous studies on self-distancing have almost exclusively focused on negative events; as a consequence, the impact of self-distancing on positive emotions is not clear. To fill these gaps, we examined in two experience sampling studies the relation between self-distancing and the duration of negative as well as positive emotions. In this presentation I will discuss the results of these two studies. |
