Development of the PhD Personality Questionnaire: An ecological approach to personality scale design

Abstract: The literature provides little knowledge on the personality attributes underlying the success of PhD candidates. Using a qualitative research paradigm, we developed an online tool, the PhD Personality Questionnaire (PPQ), to support the selection and coaching of PhD candidates. This instrument combines a high trait specificity with a high situational specificity. It significantly predicts PhD performance criteria and has incremental validity beyond the Big Five. The instrument can be considered an example of so-called ecological personality scales, which are contextualized personality inventories with a high ecological validity.
