Practical applications of the relationship between responses and response times

Abstract: With computer-presented tests more common than ever, the joint modeling of responses and response times is bound to flourish, as illustrated by a recent flurry of papers. We discuss an approach which, while compatible with these new models, is more practically orientated. Based on empirical data on RT, we simulate a progressive limitation of the time allowance for the individual item, and explore its possible influence on the psychometric properties of the items, notably on item difficulty. The resulting regressions explain a surprisingly high proportion of variance and are well predictable in a mixed linear model context. Possible applications include constructing more difficult items in situations where other methods fail, and an improved estimation of ability.
