On comparability problems in multiway dataIven Van MechelenKU Leuven | |
| Abstract: | The vast majority of methods for the analysis of multiway data presume data with fully comparable data entries, that is, entries that are expressed on commensurable scales and that have come about through some homogeneous data-generating mechanism (which further depends on some structural characteristics of the elements of the different data modes). In this talk I will show that these assumptions are often violated in practice because of the presence of differences in measurement units, because of conditionalities in the data, and because of complex dynamical interactions between the data modes in the data generation process. Subsequently I will review and critically evaluate three categories of solutions to deal with this problem: the choice of a suitable data preprocessing, the use of optimal scaling techniques, and the choice of custom-made model modifications. Throughout I will illustrate the argument with hypothetical data from the psychology of emotions. |
