Demystifying the “working-through” paradox: Towards an integrative understanding of the processes distinguishing adaptive self-reflection from dysfunctional rumination

Abstract: How can people adaptively “work-through” negative feelings without becoming overwhelmed with negative affect and dysfunctional rumination? This talk will review findings from an integrative set of studies spanning multiple levels of analysis, which suggest that a key factor determining whether people’s attempts to adaptively work-through negative feelings succeed or fail is the type of self-perspective they adopt while analyzing their feelings. That is, whether people analyze their feelings from a self-immersed (first person) or self-distanced (observer) perspective. The basic science and clinical implications of this research will be discussed.
