Processing emotional events: Consequences for emotion duration.Philippe VerduynKU Leuven | |
| Abstract: | Emotions change and evolve over time. Consequently, a better understanding of emotions can be reached only when their dynamical properties are captured adequately. A central time-related characteristic of emotions is the duration of emotional experience. Previous studies have shown that emotional experiences can last for only a couple of seconds up to several hours or even longer. Part of this variability has been explained by the mental presence of the eliciting stimulus during the emotional episode. In particular, it has been shown that thinking back at the eliciting stimulus during the emotional episode prolongs the emotional experience. However, mental reappearances may take many forms which do not necessarily affect the duration of the emotional experience in the same way. Moreover, people may not only think about what happened but they may also share the emotional event with others. During the presentation, we will discuss the findings of an experience sampling study on the relation between emotion duration on the one hand and cognitive processing and social sharing on the other hand. |
